COMMISSSIONING

Commissioning a piece of furniture is a rewarding and exciting process for both the client and the designer-maker. We always start from the point of view of the client and the need that has arisen; it could be the need for more storage space or perhaps housing a new plasma TV screen.

Once we have established all the relevant information about the project, we can start to discuss the design details; how big should it be, what material should it be made from, does it need drawers, glass on top and so on. With these facts established, the first design drawings can be prepared and sent to the client.

Normally the client would receive two or three design alternatives giving a range of costs that match the previously agreed budget range. In a further meeting, each of the design alternatives would be discussed and a final design would be agreed. This design would then be drawn up and sent to the client with a full specification sheet explaining all of the commission details.

At this point, a fixed and full cost would be quoted that would remain fixed for the next six months; this quotation would include all of the material, manufacturing, delivery and fitting costs as well as VAT. To confirm the commission a deposit of 60% is payable in advance with the balance payable on delivery of the piece of furniture. No additional costs would be added to the commission unless the design specifications are changed.

Each piece of furniture is hand-made to order, so the completion and delivery time for a commission depends on the size and complexity of the design. Generally speaking we try to complete most projects within six to ten weeks of receiving the confirmation deposit.

The initial design consultation is free and, within reason, we will work to the budget limits that you set - we are quite often able to match the prices charged by a shop such as Heals for a dining table or cabinet, but can provide you with a stunning, unique and handmade piece of furniture that you won't see in your neighbour's house!
